The Kravis Center in West Palm Beach hosted an all day dance event free of charge on Saturday, September 21st for people of all ages and dance experience to celebrate National Dance Day.
Dancers, dance teachers, choreographers and anyone who just wanted to move of all ages gathered together and attended many different group classes and masterclasses with dance teachers and professional dancers such as African dance, theater dance, everybody dance, hip hop, Horton technique, advanced ballet, country fusion line dance and jazz funk.
A freshman majoring in dance at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Ella Meyers attended the African dance and Horton technique masterclasses.
“I loved taking the African and Horton classes because I haven’t been super exposed to either style and am always seeking opportunities to become more versatile in my movement and training,” Meyers said.
While the masterclasses were taking place, dance programs such as dance studio, Soul Movement; South Florida’s oldest modern dance company, Demetrius Klein Dance Company; international dance movement, Project Dance; dance organization, Natural Movers Foundation, and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s College of the Arts were advertised in the lobby.
Kristen Vencel who has been the artistic director of Demetrius Klein Dance Company for one year attended the National Dance Day event.
“Once I really got into regularly choreographing work and started seeing myself as a choreographer, I experienced an even greater depth as a dancer. I think this is because as a choreographer I am always trying to be sure my work has a clear arc and dynamics that communicate well, so when I am dancing my work or someone else’s I am also thinking about that and able to own the material even more than I did before,” Vencel said.
Guest dancer Dakayla Wilson, who was the second runner up on So You Think You Can Dance, season 18 taught the National Dance Day routine that finished out the event and ended National Dance Day at The Kravis Center.
